Brain Training
Everyone benefits from the newest fitness
method for the 21st century –
brain fitness training.
Research has proven that throughout our lives, our brains
change based on our thoughts and activities. The science
of the brain is called
neuroscience,
and the ability of the brain to change and grow is called
brain plasticity.
Activities and Brain
Skills Used:
Reading - auditory processing, visual
processing, attention span, memory
Math - logic, visual perception,
spatial reasoning, concentration, memory
Conversation - auditory processing,
organization of thought, word finding, oral-motor
skills
Sports - visual-motorcoordination,
balance, visual processing, spatial reasoning,
accurate response time

School was difficult for Alex, because he
had learning disabilities in reading and
auditory memory. Nearly every morning Alex
cried, because he didn’t want to go to school.
After completin a brain training program,
Alex made dramatic improvements in his grades.
He progressed so much, that he no longer
needed special education services. Now,
Alex gets his homework done without frustration,
reads for enjoyment, and gets As and Bs
on his schoolwork. His proud parents are
seeing a happy child, whose abilities are
being fully realized.
A doctor participated in a home brain
training program, because he was interested
in increasing his memory. He was amazed
at his fast improvement in both visual and
auditory memory. Not only did his scores
improve rapidly, but he was surprised to
notice almost immediate improvement in his
hand-eye coordination.

brain training sessions for children and
adults at the center and offers
products for home brain training programs.
Three
types of activities used for brain training
at Brain Works:
–mental
exercises on the computer
–visual-motor-balance
exercises
–music-based
auditory training

For teens who are learning to drive and
for adults who want to recover lost driving
skills, we have
a driving program with a computer
program, steering wheel, gas pedal and brake
pedal. Visual-motor coordination, visual
attention, quick processing and decision
making are developed with this safe form
of driving practice.
Each of the activities provided by Brain
Works creates brain growth and strengthens
neural connections among important skill
areas in the brain. We combine activities
whenever possible. For example, clients
will listen to their auditory training music,
while they are doing balance board activities.
We do this, because
neurons that fire together, wire
together. The brain
becomes far more flexible, when it uses
several different skills at the same time.
Whether you do brain training at Brain
Works or in your home, the results can include
faster processing of written and spoken
information, better reasoning, quicker response
time, improved memory, better focus and
more ease of learning.
We see improvements in reading,
writing, math, reasoning, auditory processing,
visual-motor skills, communication skills,
memory, attention span, work skills, athletic
abilities and social skills.

Goals for Brain Training:
-
Students (learning challenged,
average, gifted)
- improve attention span, memory, auditory
processing, reading, math, receptive
and expressive language, reasoning,
sensory integration, coordination, organization,
processing speed and left/right brain
integration.
-
Adults - increase
memory, concentration, clarity of thought,
organization, word finding while speaking,
listening comprehension, balance, coordination,
and creativity. Most skills lost due
to lack of use, aging, illness or brain
injury can improved.
-
Athletes -
develop better visual-motor skills,
balance, peripheral vision, spatial
reasoning, focus and response time.

The most fundamental skills that contribute
to our learning ability are visual processing,
auditory processing,
sensory integration, memory, attention span
and movement.
The centers for these foundational skills
are found in various parts of the brain.
It is important for the brain cells in each
area to form pathways that connect with
other regions of the brain. With good connections,
the brain regions can work as a team.
For example, when we read, the auditory
and the visual brain areas work together
through their highway of brain cell connections.
The visual region allows us to see printed
words, and the auditory region helps us
remember the letter sounds. We then pronounce
the words aloud or silently as we read.
Good readers have enough visual and auditory
connections, that they instantly recognize
the sight and sound of familiar words. Readers
with poor neural connections may spend time
sounding out words, and then find they do
not remember how to pronounce the words,
when they see them in the future.
If there are not enough brain pathways
connecting the basic visual, auditory and
motor regions of the brain, children and
adults often have difficulty with a variety
of tasks such as comprehending conversations,
expressing their thoughts, achieving in
reading, writing and math, writing legibly
or performing decently in sports.
Children who have insufficient brain
or neural pathways often experience frustration
and underachieve at school. They may also
be hypersensitive to sounds or touch, have
an attention problem or have problems with
coordination.
Adults who have problems remaining from
childhood or who are slowing down with age,
tend to find their need for better neural
connections show up as mediocre work performance
due to attention and memory difficulties,
less communication in social situations
and poorer physical coordination.
